Marriage Recommitment Prayer Service

(Adapted from an original by Tom Rinkoski, Diocese of Green Bay, United States of America)

Leader: Welcome to a ceremony of recommitment to married love. In the spirit of this week of celebration we are invited to reflect on our foundations and fundamentals. Marriage is at the root of who we are as a people. It is a sacramental image, a sacred vocation, and a living out of the Paschal Mystery.

Having learned something about marriage, because of their experience, these couples do not make this commitment lightly. They come to this moment with experience of the call and the costs of commitment. They understand that marriage cannot be entered into with demands or false expectation, but rather with trust, in God and in each other.

Men, then women, recite the following line by line:

Participant: I________, ask you_________, to be my partner, my lover, my friend and my spouse. I re-announce and declare my intention to give you my deepest friendship and love, not only when things are going well, but also when they are not.
I further announce, before God and those gathered here, that I will seek always to see the light of God within you and seek always to share the light of God within me. It is my intention to be with you forever, in a sacred and holy partnership, that we may do God's work, sharing all that good that is within us, with all those whose lives we touch.

Leader: Spirit of Love, celebrate this public commitment with us. These couples' destinies are woven into one design and their perils and joys shall not be known apart. May their homes be a place of grace for all who enter, a place where young and old are renewed in each others company, a place for growing and a place for sharing, a place for prayer and a place for love. May those who are near to these couples be enriched by the beauty of their love for each other. May their work be a blessing for the world. May their days be good and long upon the earth. And may Almighty God bless you, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen
